Brain Slice Electrophysiology

Ex vivo brain slice electrophysiology

ICE Bioscience combines whole-cell patch clamp with complementary field-potential recording in viable brain slices. The platform measures neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission, receptor-mediated currents and circuit-level activity while retaining the local cellular organization of the selected brain region.

Core capabilities

Functional readouts from single neurons to local circuits

Neuronal excitability

Spontaneous and evoked action potentials provide direct assessment of neuronal firing and compound-induced changes in excitability.

Synaptic and receptor currents

Recordings include sEPSC/sIPSC, mEPSC/mIPSC and eEPSC/eIPSC, together with NMDA, AMPA and GABAA receptor-mediated currents.

Synaptic plasticity and network activity

LTP, LTD, extracellular field potentials and epileptiform activity support evaluation of plasticity and local circuit function.

Brain-region coverage

Region-specific recording strategies

Hippocampus
LTP/LTD, postsynaptic currents, receptor currents, field potentials and epileptiform activity
Prefrontal and frontal cortex             Action-potential recording and neuronal excitability
Dorsal raphe and cerebellum             Spontaneous and evoked action-potential recording
Additional regions             Amygdala, striatum, lateral habenula and substantia nigra
Applications

Brain slice studies for pharmacology and safety

Pharmacodynamic assessment

Evaluate compound effects in models relevant to neurodegeneration, cerebral ischemia, depression and epilepsy.

Epilepsy-related safety evaluation

Assess compound effects on neuronal firing and epileptiform activity to support functional seizure-risk evaluation.
