Demethylases

Demethylases are enzymes that remove methyl groups from histones and other proteins, thereby regulating gene expression and chromatin structure. Two important examples are LSD enzymes, including LSD1, and FTO (Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated Protein).

LSD1 removes methyl groups from histone H3 and influences chromatin structure and gene repression, making it a relevant target in cancer research, including leukemia studies. FTO is an RNA demethylase involved in metabolic regulation, and its biological role has connected it with obesity and metabolic disorders. Together, LSD and FTO illustrate the therapeutic potential of demethylase inhibitors for modulating disease-associated gene-expression pathways.
